Summer Pasture is a feature-length documentary that chronicles one summer with a young nomad family living in the high grasslands of eastern Tibet. Locho, his wife Yama, and their infant daughter survive in the mountains by herding yak, much as their ancestors have for generations. In recent years, however, nomadic life has become increasingly difficult and now many nomads are settling in town. Soon, Locho and Yama will face the same predicament, when they must choose whether to raise their daughter in the pasture or send her school -- a decision that will have deep implications for their future as nomads.

Valley of the Heroes offers a rare glimpse at a pivotal moment of cultural and linguistic transition among Tibetans and Muslims in Hualong County, a remote community in Amdo, Tibet, part of what is now eastern Qinghai Province, China. Over the past several decades, Tibetans living in Hualong have experienced rapid cultural shifts accelerated by language loss – today more than 30% are unable to speak their own native language. The film spends time with an assortment of village residents and elders who reflect on the changes taking place in their community, and also documents a unique Tibetan language program that is attempting to address the situation.

2:00PM - Old DogSet in a small Tibetan village, whose remote landscape is just as critical to the story as any one character, Old Dog tells the story of an old Tibetan mastiff and the strain the dog poses on a relationship between a man and his son. As dogs are reportedly being stolen from their rightful owners in their village, the son, Gonpo, decides that it would be wise to sell the dog and earn some money before he is stolen from them. This action results in a conflict between the two generations and the fate of their trusted dog hangs in the balance, as he is sold, repurchased, stolen, and recaptured before the father decides how to handle the situation.
6:00PM - TharloHigh in the desolate, windswept mountains of Tibet lives a shepherd named Tharlo. He tends his sheep and rides his motorcycle, passing his days in familiar and traditional routines far from the city lights. But when Tharlo travels to the city for an ID card photo and meets Yangtso, a modern young hairdresser, his monastic life will forever change. Leading Tibetan auteur Pema Tseden (The Search, Old Dog) first wrote Tharlo's story as a novella that audiences can read here in English for the first time, published as part of this DVD. In adapting his spare and poignant short story for the screen, Tseden is at the height of his directorial powers, using just 84 meticulously composed shots to channel Tharlo's world into gorgeous vistas of black-and-white.
